✈️ Does flying cause Breast cancer or affect the course of the disease?

I've received an interesting question from a patient about the potential negative effects of flying ✈️ for women with Breast cancer.

👍 The short answer:

Flying itself does not cause Breast cancer and does not worsen the condition.

However, there are some important nuances to keep in mind.

❓Can flying trigger the development of Breast cancer?

No. Currently, there is no evidence that air travel increases the risk of developing Breast cancer.

While the effects of cosmic radiation✨ at high altitudes are sometimes discussed, radiation levels during normal commercial flights are too low to have a significant impact.

This is more of a concern for professional pilots 🧑🏻‍✈️ and flight attendants with many years of experience than for occasional passengers.

❓What about flying for women already diagnosed with Breast cancer?

👍 In most cases, it is perfectly safe.

However, the decision depends on the stage of treatment and your overall health.

ℹ️ Key points to consider:

✔️ After surgery:

Flying is possible once your general condition has stabilized, but always check with your surgeon regarding the specific timing.

✔️ During chemotherapy ☣️:

It is crucial to monitor your immune system. During periods when white blood cell counts are significantly low, flying and visiting crowded places is not recommended.

✔️Risk of thrombosis:

Long flights can increase the risk of blood clots, especially during treatment.

I recommend moving around the cabin, staying hydrated, and potentially wearing compression stockings (if approved by your doctor).

✔️ Lymphedema (Lymphostasis):

After axillary (armpit) lymph node removal, there is a risk of arm swelling due to pressure changes.

A compression sleeve is often recommended during the flight.

✔️General well-being:

Fatigue and nausea are common side effects of treatment.

Plan your travel to allow for extra rest.

🚫When to postpone a flight:

- Early postoperative period.

- Severe side effects from treatment.

- Unstable general condition.

ℹ️ Conclusion:

Flying is not dangerous in terms of cancer progression.

However, if you are currently undergoing treatment, please discuss your travel plans with your Medical oncologist 👩🏻‍⚕️ to ensure your trip is as safe and comfortable as possible.
